Entry from: Nice, France Entry Title: “On our way to Nice” Entry: “We were up early in Perpignon to catch our train to Nice. Passing Narbonne, Montpelier, Arles and Avignon for a transfer in Marseilles past Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, Cannes and Antibes arriving in Nice (‘Nice Ville’ Station) we headed outside bearing left to the building next door for the Tourist Information Office. Inside they were pretty well organized and suggested a hostel near the ‘Old City’. We stopping at the first pizza stand we saw for a couple of slices while we waited for the rain to lighten up. Then headed down Avenue Jean Medecin, the street was barely passable on foot as they were constructing a new tramway up the center of the street to be completed 2007 or 2008. After a bit of confusion we reached the hostel. 22.90 Euro each = 45.80 in a dormitory style (6 bed) with the bathroom down the hall. After the ordeal we just dealt with getting to Nice, we decided we needed a private room to unwind and catch a nap. So, we were off once more. Carrying our bags over our raincoats with an extra bag on backwards, covering our chests. The hotels had their prices posted on the outside which made it more convenient but left us w/no escape from the rain. Most were over 100 Euro (over our budget). You could see the frustration …

Entry from: Kotor, Montenegro Entry Title: “Hell of a climb, but well worth it for the view.” Entry: “We arrived at Kotor just after lunch. Once again it was a very scenic drive looking down upon the coastline for pretty much for the entire trip. Once again a relatively easy boarding crossing with no trouble, we are starting to get very used to them now. Anyway we made our way to our hostel (Montenegro Hostel) which was located in the old part of town and proceeded to get settled. We were unable to get a private room so decided that it was just as easy to get a dorm room and we were used to dorms from earlier on in the trip anyway. Boy weren’t we wrong. After getting settled we set out to find some lunch and do some exploring. Kotor is a very beautiful seaside community (world heritage) of which the old town is set behind great walls. Its main industry is tourists and especially the cruise ships and luxury yachts of which some would be worth more money than I could ever make in a life time. The town hall actually has the date of 809- 2009 on it which is a fair bit of time to be around. If you do research on Kotor it is said to be from as early as 168 BC. Anyway we spent the day sightseeing before calling it a night. Unfortunately we are not used to dorms and dealing with snorers, heat and other …

Entry from: Stockholm, Sweden Entry Title: “Sweet Swedish Hospitality!” Entry: “My last year of high school I befriended an exchange student from Sweden, Chris. Going to Sweden was never in the plan but once he learned of my trip he forced me to head north. I am very glad I did, It was one of my favorite parts of this trip. As we left Copenhagen I was feeling pretty excited about getting to stay in a house and not a hostel or hotel, and to have someone who spoke the native language (I would learn that isn’t a big deal in Sweden since they start learning English at about four years old). The train ride between Copenhagen and Stockholm was beautiful. The further north we traveled the more I realized that Sweden looks a lot like where I am from (The Pacific Northwest). Large mountains, evergreen trees everywhere, and bright clear blue water was everywhere to be seen. The fact that it was raining also helped make me feel right at home. Coming into Stockholm I noticed how different the buildings were from anything I had seen in Europe so far. They had a bit of a Russian look to them, the rounded tower points that you see often in pictures of Moscow. We exited the train and found Chris very quickly and easily. He took us to his parent’s house, which was a very nice and large house. He told us that his …

Entry from: Nice, France Entry Title: “Provence-Alps-C” Entry: “The Provence-Alps-Côte d’Azur region is situated between the Mediterranean coastline and the Alps. Extraordinary scenery combined with a rich historical past of exceptional archaeological and architectural interest, together with a multitude of celebrations and festivals, make it an exciting area to visit. The French Riviera-Côte d’Azur stretches along the Mediterranean at the foot of the last outcrop of the Alpine chain. Thanks to its southern situation, the proximity of the sea and the full southern exposure, this region is protected from the cold continental winds resulting in a wonderful microclimate. This microclimate supports a variety of vegetation such as orange trees, aloe, cactus, eucalyptus, rose-laurel, bougainvillea and mimosa. Our tour’s first stop is the elegant town of Cannes famous for its annual international film festival every May. This modern city grew up from a small fishing town on the south coast of France. In the 11th century Cannes was owned by monks who took enough money from wealthy pilgrims that they expanded their monastery to the nearby Island of St Honorat. They also built a square tower on the top of the hill as a lookout post for Saracen pirates. The tower still stands today in Cannes’ Old Town that was …

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Fuengirola, Spain by TravelPod blogger Chickensafloat titled “Cadiz to Fuengirola”. TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Chickensafloat’s travel blog entry: “El Puerto de Santa Maria While in Cadiz bay we stayed in El Puerto de Santa Maria which used to be the main shipping post for Sherry from Jerez. It still has the sherry bodegas down by the river and one can get trips around them. The yacht club marina is the friendliest we have visited so far. We were met on arrival, assisted with mooring and then given a guided tour of the club’s facilities which included tennis courts, a gym and swimming pool. The next day the guy who met us on arrival then showed Gina the laundry and arranged for tokens for her to use it. Cadiz On Friday and Saturday we went to Seville (see separate blog) and on Sunday caught the ferry across to Cadiz. Basically it was closed! Perhaps a tad unfair, it was Sunday morning and we were trying to find somewhere to buy food to see us over the next 3 days. The city is a little run down but, like an ageing aristo, has elegance and charm. We would certainly like to re-visit sometime (but not on a Sunday). Barbate We left Puerto de Santa Maria at 8.00 on Monday morning and headed for Barbate, our last stop before the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean. Crossing Cadiz bay into a brisk south westerly wind was unpleasant. However, once back into the Atlantic we had a glorious sail down to Cape …

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Kotor, Montenegro by TravelPod blogger Will titled “Little Italy”. TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Will’s travel blog entry: “I had never even heard of the small city of Kotor before my friend Aga in Krakow showed me some photos from her trip there, but once I saw them I knew it was a place I had to visit. The picturesque walled town had a dramatic location, nestled at the foot of Southern Europe’s deepest fjord beneath huge brooding mountains. Take the city away and the spectacular looking scenery could have been from Fjordland in New Zealand or even Norway, and I knew that I couldn’t miss it while I was in the region. It was a beautiful two hour journey along Montenegro’s stunning Adriatic coast from Bar to Kotor, passing a number of small towns and the small city of Budva. The sun was still shining, and I was glad we made the journey during daylight hours. We arrived in Kotor late afternoon, and immediately went into the old town (stari grad) to find some accommodation. One of the tourist offices helped us find a private room in a doctor’s home, situated right on the shore of the fjord, about a 20 minute walk from the old town which suited us perfectly. After checking in and having another long overdue shower following the night train from Belgrade we went back into the old town for the evening. The following day was very relaxing, the first without any travel on our trip! It was spent wandering around the …

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Aix-en-Provence, France by TravelPod blogger Cft89 titled “Over a month in…” Cft89’s travel blog entry: “As it is nearly a month after my last entry, the time has come to write my third installment of mes aventures francaises… Having spent most of my free time out with the girls (drinking far too much 1664 and sangria), I didn’t think I’d have much to write about, hence the delay on this entry, however the length of this will probably tell you that I was wrong! For a start, we’ve had two 21st birthdays so far, Lizzie’s and then Louise’s today, so lots of celebrating. Lizzie was treated to a surprise tea party chez moi (complete with Disney napkins and cups…and wine) and I bought her a kettle, tea, and biscuits, what every British girl on her year abroad needs (well, apart from myself, being a strange and rare non-tea-drinking creature)! She had a fantastic time and all were home by 10:30 (the buses don’t run late here), but then again we had started relatively early! For Louise we had a film night and then a night out. I think her favourite present was some cereal and kidney beans from Amy…we’re waiting to experience her famous chilli con carne (hint hint). However, the French don’t really ‘do’ birthday cakes in the same way that we do, so, instead of spending 15€ on an admitttedly beautiful patisserie cake, we’ve been sticking candles in madeleines and such like, so not all of our birthday traditions are lost …
